The Rise and Fall of the Cassette

All bisque or parian porcelain is unglazed and in Victorian times was admired for its sculptural qualities. The name "Parian" is in fact attributed to Thomas Minton, the famous 19th century English potter, who coined the name Parian after Paros, the Greek island that quarried much of the pure white sculptural marble used in studios.

This afternoon I will be making my way to LAX Airport so that I can jet back home to Detroit, MI for the rest of the week to pre-celebrate the holidays with my family and friends back home:

Despite the fact that I really, really did NOT want to fly again this year I thought it would be nice to go home for a quick trip in between all the crazy Thanksgiving and Xmas melee. I’ll get to spend time with my parents and friends and I’ll get to visit some of my favorite haunts without having to deal with all the holiday lunacy. I’ll be working as usual for the rest of the week but from tomorrow ’til Sunday, I’ll be comin’ atcha from Detroit Rock City!

I hear it’s cold in the Midwest … yeah.

Arts and Entertainment:Music from EzineArticles.com

Being a budding beat maker has introduced me to the differences between digital audio file formats, and which ones to use for the Internet and to burn on CDs. The two most widely used audio files are MP3s and the .wav file format. As you may already know, MP3 audio files is the file of choice for online listening, selling and downloading to your computer or portable music device. However, Waveform Audio File Format, or WAV for short, has been around since the introduction of Windows 95, and has remained the standard.

Piano Maintenance Tips

Most everyone who knows anything about rockabilly will agree that the musical genre came about as musicians of the 1950s mixed country music and blues music together. In actuality, you really have to throw rhythm and blues music into the mix and also sprinkle in a healthy dose of gospel music. I'd argue that there was a pinch of jazz music thrown into the original mix too, but you don't often hear people supporting that argument. But the Stray Cats guitarist and front man, Brian Setzer, made it perfectly clear that jazz has a place in the rockabilly genre.

Gorilla Zoe Mixtapes and How They Made History

It is possible to learn to improve your vocal range. Most people believe their voice is just what it is and it cannot be changed. This is just not true. The upper and lower ranges can be pushed gently over time. Vocal exercises can improve range and tone. The voice will need to be exercised just like a muscle. The more it's used the stronger it gets.

Great news Battlestar Galactica fans, Deadline is reporting that SyFy has ordered a 2-hour pilot for a proposed new prequel spin-off series of the franchise. As you may know, Caprica (the current BG prequel spin-off) is still in its first season (with the hope of a season 2 pickup soon) so the folks at SyFy think it’s a great time to introduce another spin-off series that is set in the 10th year of the Cylon War and is focused around the young Academy graduate William Adama (who is just a kid in Caprica and is the seasoned admiral in Battlestar Galactica). Here are the deets about this new spin-off series:

SyFy is going back to the Battlestar Galactica well. After launching prequel Caprica, which is now airing the second part of its first season while awaiting word on a second-season pickup, the cable network has greenlighted a two-hour pilot for Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome or BGBC how it will probably be known in the Battlestar fan universe. The pilot, about the young years of Ensign William Adama, hails from Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick and Universal Cable Prods. and will involve CGI and virtual technology.

I am a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica and was very sad when the series had to end … but, to be honest, I never really got into Caprica. I watched the series pilot movie but it just didn’t win me over and I decided not to watch the series. That being said, I’m very interested in this new proposed spin-off that focuses on the young William Adama. JJ Abrams found great success with his prequel version of Star Trek which focuses on the young crew of the USS Enterprise … I really think that SyFy can enjoy that kind of success with Battlestar. After the jump, read the official announcement from SyFy about Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet. “The ‘Galactica’ universe as re-imagined by Ron Moore and David Eick is rich with possibilities and backstory,” said SyFy’s Mark Stern. “We jumped at the chance to revisit the William Adama character and explore this exciting chapter in the BSG narrative which falls between the events of the original series and the prequel, ‘Caprica,’ currently airing on Syfy.” “While maintaining the themes of politics, social propaganda, and the timeless question: what does it mean to be human? – ‘Blood & Chrome’ will also return us to the authentic, relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ early seasons,” said Eick. Michael Taylor wrote the teleplay from a story by Eick, Taylor and Bradley Thompson & David Weddle.

In the end, it all comes down to the writing … Battlestar was such a great show because the writing was so fantastic. I have been hearing great things about Caprica (particularly the fantastic writing) so I may have to give that show a second chance. I am really excited about Blood & Chrome tho … I’m in desperate need of a new sci-fi series to fall in love with. Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome sounds perfect. Any Battlestar fans out there … does this sound like a great idea for a new series to you?

Last night I got together with Tam, Ollie, Rob and Caleb for an impromptu zombie movie party that we planned when we all hung out together last Monday night. For the most part, we kinda just hung out and talked but we did make some time to watch the hilariously funny zombie film Fido:

Apparently Fido wasn’t well revived when it was released in theaters back in 2006 because it wasn’t really promoted very well. Set in the 50′s, Fido tells the tale of a world where people keep zombies at pets/servants/whatever. It’s a pretty good movie and I think many people would’ve loved to have seen it in theaters but, again, I myself never knew it existed until last night. It’s worth seeking out … we all loved it.

I don’t have big plans for tonight just yet … I’m in desperate need of a haircut so I have to take care of that. I’m sure David and I will be able to think of something fun to do on our Friday night. It’s the weekend, y’all … have a great one!

Les Chansons Des Perverts - 16 Super Hits

Rockabilly was a uniquely American invention. The music grew out of the rich diversity of American musical forms of the first half of the 20th century. Blues, country, gospel, rhythm and blues, and even elements of jazz could be said to have come together and manifested themselves in a wild new type of music that came to be called rockabilly. The development of rock and roll and rockabilly can be considered among America's proudest accomplishments. But if it hadn't have been for the British, rockabilly might not be the vibrant and living musical art form that it is today, almost 60 years after it first hit the pop, country, and R&B charts.

Choosing a Music Poster for Your Room

When I mention piano practice, it almost always gets most students of the instrument to cringe a little...especially adults who took lessons as a kid and are thinking about starting piano lessons again. The memories, good or bad, inevitably start to resurface. However, if you had a bad experience with the piano at some point in your life, that doesn't mean the next experience has to be a negative one as well. Learning to play the piano can be enjoyable. Piano practice doesn't have to be boring and tedious if you have solid, realistic goals and a proven, time-tested method of practice.
