Most Americans have hundreds or even thousands of songs in their personal music collection, and real die-hard music fans often have hundreds of thousands of songs in their own collections. In the past, that meant that people bought several records, 8-track tapes, cassette tapes or CDs, but these days, it means that people download all of those songs directly onto their computers, smartphones or portable music players.
